Early Sunday Morning 1930, (after Edward Hopper), poem

Early Sunday, sleepy street scape,
Sun-rays spreading over shadowy side walks.

Half-awake windows, red residences over
uniform shop frontages, nickels and dimes.

Early Sunday traffic free,
Lords day observances.

No whispering chimney smoke
betraying early morning risers.

Early Sunday, blue sky overhead
Bronx Zoo, play swings in the Park.

Water hydrant watchful,
Barber pole boldly spinning.
Early Sunday, windows advertising
On this day of rest, no one cares.

Bodies recovering from six days of toil,
Trouble and strife, refreshing spirits.

Early Sunday exempt from material thoughts,
Renewal of one’s body and soul.

Absence of worries, freedom from labours,
Routine, away from customer demands.

Early Sunday opportunity to be self-centered,
Minds to roam, thoughts to meander.

Privacy, shielded from public scrutiny,
Protected from prying eyes, screeching demands.

Early Sunday, quiet privileges, selectively guarded,
hard earned, not easily squandered.

FDR`s New Deal giving hope
combating 1930`s Depression.

Early Sunday time for languorous bodies
to engage in sexual couplings.
Whole day stretching ahead, promised full of
possibilities, friends visiting, weekly treats.

Early Sunday, harmony, unity, company
keeping, stepping out, romancing and dancing.
